Waiting Meditation

Guided Meditation

As our lives and schedules become increasingly full, have you ever noticed the thoughts and emotions that arise when we are asked to wait or slow down? Maybe you are stuck at a stoplight, or waiting on a very slow elevator, or even put on hold listening to music or some sort of message.

Perhaps, if we considered these inconveniences as little vacations, they might have a more soothing effect.

Meditate on your own or with a group

  1. Maybe now would be a good time to try a nice deep breath. Just inhale fully and exhale fully and notice the nourishing quality of the breath and how it has the tendency to center you wherever you are.
  2. Next notice any thoughts or emotions that you are experiencing in this moment. Notice if you are holding yourself responsible for things outside of your control.
  3. In this moment, you have been asked only to wait with no other requirements.  Imagine that. How often are you asked to do nothing?
  4. Inhale again, noticing the full inhalation. Exhale and notice the full exhalation. Bring your attention to anything that comes to you without trying to change it or fix it or resist it. Just observe and wait.
  5. When the light turns green, the elevator arrives, or the party you are calling picks up, begin again with focused attention, a relaxed mind, and a compassionate heart. Peace to you.
