Sound to Silence

Guided Meditation

Those of us born into this life with the capacity to hear, arrive immersed in a cacophony of sounds.

Some sounds are familiar and bring us comfort, like the heartbeat of your own mother. Others spark our natural curiosity or even frighten us.

Moment by moment, hour by hour, and day by day we are exposed to more and more sounds. We become accustomed to them and over time they join the ambient background soundtrack of our human experience.

They tend to blend together like an orchestra of noise. We sometimes add sounds to call attention to an event such as an alarm or something to acknowledge a celebration. Even those sounds, when experienced enough, gradually join the orchestra and become difficult to pick out as individual communications.

What we have become unaccustomed to, is silence.

In this reflection, the invitation is to listen. Just listen.

Notice any thoughts, feelings, and sensations that you experience and allow noticing to be enough. Make yourself comfortable and give yourself permission to just be with the sounds and the one minute of silence to follow. At the closing of this practice we will celebrate with the ringing of the bell.

Reflection Prompts:

Reflect silently or in your journal.

  • What thoughts, feelings, or sensations arose during this practice?
  • What might this experience be calling you to be or to do?
