Self-Compassion in Times of Suffering
Prayer
We learn of a need
And we rush in
Or consider the options
Often both
We know a person is suffering
And we provide care, companionship, concern
Or consider the options
Often both
We hear a cry around us, inside of us
And we pause to listen
Or blunt the emotion
Often both
In the midst of growing needs
In the midst of holistic suffering
In the midst of the cries
We pause
And find a moment to be gentle
To bring context to all that surrounds us
The needs, the suffering, the cries
And the generosity, the healing, the compassion
We learn of a way of being
That opens our hearts to first
Be compassionate towards ourselves
So we may extend ourselves to the world.
