How to Practice Deep Listening

Learn

Our attention bestows humanity on one another. In the practice of deep listening, we empty ourselves in order to meet the other, for it is only when we are truly recognized and heard that we truly become connected.

Deep listening can be understood and cultivated through six steps:

1. Let Go

Make room so that you have the capacity to listen.

2. Insight

Welcome your natural insight and wisdom.

3. Silence

Cultivate silence so that others can self-reflect.

4. Trust

Trust the insight and wisdom in others.

5. Empowerment

Allow others to make their own connections.

6. Not Knowing

Make friends with uncertainty.

For silent or written reflection:

  • How have you experienced this kind of deep listening
  • What obstacles are in place that prevent you from practicing one or many of these skills?
