Five Why's: Finding Meaning in Your Work
Writing Practice
This simple writing practice invites us to reflect on the meaning in our work. By asking the simple question of "why?" five separate times, we are able to dive a little deeper into the meaning of our daily tasks, projects, programs, and goals.
Step 1: Choose a task, project, program, goal you are involved in that’s pretty significant to you. Write it down. Allow yourself at least a minute.
Step 2: In one sentence, answer the following question: Why is this task/goal/project important? Allow yourself at least a minute.
Step 3: Looking at what you just wrote, why is that important? Allow yourself at least thirty seconds.
Step 4: Looking at your second response, why is that important? Allow yourself at least thirty seconds.
Step 5: Looking at your third response, why is that important? Allow yourself at least 30 seconds.
Step 6: Finally, looking at your fourth response, why is that important? Allow yourself at least 30 seconds.
